Overnight Dexamethasone Suppression Test
The overnight dexamethasone suppression test is being done to see if your body is making too much cortisol. An excessive amount of cortisol can cause a condition called Cushing's syndrome.
To do the test properly you need to take two small Dexamethasone tablets at 11pm or at your usual bedtime. The Dexamethasone tablets are each .5mg and you need to take 2 of them for a total of 1mg. The next morning you need to go to the laboratory to have blood drawn for a blood cortisol level between about 8-9am.
Usually this dose of Dexamethasone causes the adrenal glands to make a lot less cortisol (in other words it 'suppresses' the adrenal gland and the cortisol level). If the cortisol level does NOT suppress then that is suggestive of an overactive adrenal gland and additional testing will be needed.

24 HOUR URINE COLLECTIONS
You have been asked to do a 24-hour urine collection. This may be used to help determine how the kidneys are functioning, to measure the amount of certain hormones that the body is producing or to measure calcium and other minerals for kidney stone and osteoporosis issues.
For the measurements and the results of this test to be accurate, the urine must be collected in the proper way. It is important that the urine collection be for a full 24 hours, not more and not less, or the test results will be misleading.
It is usually easiest to start the collection first thing in the morning or when you wake up after your bedtime. You need to start the collection with an empty bladder. Remember that all of the urine that is in your bladder when you first wake up was made while you were sleeping. Therefore, empty your bladder when you first get out of bed and discard (flush away) this urine. Record the time that you emptied your bladder as the “start time” for the collection (for example: “7 AM”).
After that you need to save all of the urine that you pass. You can use a large paper cup or get special container from the lab such as a “hat” to put over the toilet seat or little urinal (for men). Pour all of the urine into the special jug that the lab gives you for the urine collection (based on what is being measured, there will be special preservatives in this jug). Be sure to collect any urine that you pass throughout the night. You then need to save the urine that is in your bladder when you get up the next day to complete the 24 hour collection. Try to do this fairly close in time to your original starting time (if you started the collection at 7 AM as above, then you want to empty your bladder at about 7 AM the next day and this time SAVE the urine that you pass as this urine is part of the 24 hour time period).
